LOGGING OPERATIONS
NAFP
runs its own logging operations. Each year, the company
harvests approximately 200 000 cubic meters of wood,
from different softwood species (spruce, fir, pine,
cedar) and from different hardwood species. This accounts
for half of the volumes NAFP needs to operate the sawmills.
Two different methods of harvesting
are practiced. Conventional method, with woodcutters
helped by skidders and other hand tools (chainsaws,
etc.). Mechanical method, using heavy machinery such
as tree harvesters and processor.
NAFP recognize the importance of the
environment impact of harvesting in the forest and selecting
the best harvesting method to protect the environment.
This is an area where compromise is not an option. During
the 1996-97 harvesting season, NAFP won the Fortunat
J. Picard Award, given to the company with the best
logging operations on Fraser-Nexfor licence. That season
we didn't register a single environmental regulation
violation. NAFP is now certified ISO 14001. The company
is also looking forward to obtain SFI (sustainable forestry
initiative) certification by 2004.
NAFP owns 2,400
acres of woodlots and replants immediately after harvesting,
whenever possible.
Approximately one third of the
company's total manpower in employed in logging operations.
